Mini-digest #01
If you need something new to watch, read, or listen to, maybe you'll find it here.
Trying out a new format to provide some mid-week inspiration. Usually I post these as notes on the
app but unless you use the app, you won’t see them. This won’t be a weekly feature, more likely to be shared when there’s a decent collection of recommendations. Think of it as leaning more into the “bobs” part of the newsletter title rather than “Brands”.Watching or Watched 👀:
Everyone and their mom is talking about One Day and yes I binged it too but if that isn’t your vibe, may I recommend two other shows I enjoyed?
Mr and Mrs Smith on Amazon Prime - Honestly shocked by how little I’ve heard people talk about this show and I can’t help myself but tell everyone I meet with to watch it. As a HUGE fan of Donald Glover and Maya Erskine from their Community and Pen15 days respectively, I found this pairing lead to such great chemistry on screen. There were moments when I felt I shouldn’t laugh maybe but still did - overall a solid piece of entertainment. All episodes are up and will make for a great weekend binge, if that is on your agenda.
The New Look on Apple TV - Haven’t heard anyone talk about this show in all that I’ve scrolled. It’s been a fascinating watch and while I can’t speak to the historical accuracy of it, there were a couple things I found interesting so far. 1) I heard Avery Trufelman talk about Theatre de la mode on her podcast
a couple years ago and to see a rendition of it on the show was really cool! 2) So many luxury houses were all founded around the same time, which I had no idea about! To hear Dior, Balmain, Cardin, Chanel, etc. all tossed around in a casual conversations on the show feels...strange? Did everyone know the timelines of when these houses formed? Have I been living under a rock? After watching shows based on true stories, I love to read the real history behind it. If you have books that are more factual about this time in history, please do share! These episodes drop weekly, and I will be catching up on this weeks episode as this newsletter goes live.
Reading or read 📚:
Strangely my first two reads of this year have been around similar themes- breakups. One from a female POV and the other from a male POV. Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey and Good Material by Dolly Alderton both explore deep underlying issues without making it too heavy for the reader. Highly recommend both if you are looking for your next novel.
Who doesn't remember the craze around the Ezra Klien’s podcast episode with Kyle Chayka about How to Discover Your Own Style? In that episode, Kyle Chayka’s new book Filterworld was mentioned, which I just started reading (as a pallet cleanser after the last two novels mentioned above) and its a fascinating read as expected. I haven’t gotten far enough down the book to have an opinion yet but might I plug in two other ones with similar essence I have read in the past and rave about? Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino and How Do We Know We're Doing It Right? by
are excellent. Both authors write in such an eloquent yet approachable manner that makes me sit with the discomfort of our behaviors in a way that I haven’t really experienced before.
Listening or Listened 🎧:
Two podcasts my husband sent to me last week, really made my uphill dog walks much more bearable: 1) AQUIRED - Hermés (4 hours and 11 mins!) and 2) TechCrunch - Ariel Kaye of Parachute fame ( more reasonable 33 mins). The Hermés story is a fascinating one. A brand that has no marketing department? Is there any other brand out there without a marketing team? Vogue did a short video with Hermés if you are looking for more after that 4 hour deep-dive.
I look forward to the BoF podcast and one of their recent episodes was with Avery Trufelman of
(see above!). The depth she goes to capture each story is impressive and I urge you to listen to her interview with BoF but also listen to her podcast where she deep dives on a variety of topics regarding the clothing we wear - it will truly change the way you see what hangs in your closet.Another staple in my weekly podcast rotation is
‘s Second Life and one of her latest episodes with has been living rent free in my head. Her thoughtful approach to building Crown Affair and her honesty regarding her journey made in an insightful conversation to listen to.
And that’s all I’ve got for you! Did you already watch, read, listen to any of these? Do you have recommendations for me? I would love to know!
I’ll be back on Sunday with another brand and founder story 💌.
All my friends are also talking about The New Look - will have to watch!
